misssecretagent:

The Cathedral is a short film directed by Tomasz Bagiński, nominated in 2002 for the Academy Award for Animated Short Film for the 75th Academy Awards.

The film is visually stunning, but aside from aesthetics, there seems to be a much deeper message being portrayed here. A lone figure wanders through the dark, surreal world of the “Cathedral.” As he comes to the edge, a source pours immense light into this world, the character then spontaneously transforms, becoming a part of the cathedral structure.

It is interesting for many reasons but one in particular stood out to me- that the film seems to play into a reversal. Light usually comes to save the day when one is in embedded in darkness, but yet in this case, in darkness he is free and upon the light, he becomes confined.

The light is perhaps a metaphor for the light of judgment that shines upon one’s life- that inevitably all deeds and misdeeds are brightly shown and will determine the freedom and movement of one’s soul…

Have you heard Orson Welles failing to record three Findus frozen foods commercials? It is  beautiful and grumpy, and was played to me by an audio engineer after I’d spent three days recording an audio book, to show how much worse it could be.

Orson - a curmudgeon after my own heart.
